Overview
Mac support that actually understands Macs
Plenty of IT providers treat Macs as an afterthought. For Mac-first and creative teams, that means slow, frustrating support.
WhizzIT supports macOS properly, device management, security and support, whether you’re all-Mac or a mixed Windows and Mac environment.
Mac support runs on the same helpdesk, monitoring and patching stack as the rest of our support, so an all-Mac office and a mixed Windows and Mac estate are handled in one place rather than split between providers. Across 2025 our average first response time was 9 minutes and our average resolution time was 6 hours, measured across every ticket we handled. We are a team of five engineers supporting more than 30 UK businesses, from two-user teams to organisations of 150+ users. WhizzIT is Cyber Essentials certified and a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider, so our security fundamentals are independently assessed rather than simply claimed.

Device management
How a managed Mac fleet actually works
Most Mac problems in a business are not really Mac problems. They are the result of nobody managing the devices centrally.
-
01
Zero-touch setup
With Apple Business Manager and automated device enrolment, a Mac bought for a new starter can be shipped straight to them. It enrols itself the first time it is switched on, applies your settings, installs the apps they need and lands ready to work. Nobody has to sit and build it, and nobody has to post it to us first.
-
02
Settings that stick
Configuration profiles let us set the things that matter once and have them hold across every device: full-disk encryption on, the firewall enabled, a sensible screen lock, and administrator rights given deliberately rather than by default. New Macs inherit the same standard automatically.
-
03
Updates and offboarding
macOS releases, browsers and business apps are kept current on a schedule instead of whenever someone gets round to clicking the prompt. When a device is lost, or someone leaves, it can be locked or wiped remotely and the licences reclaimed rather than quietly disappearing.
Mac and Windows together
Mixed environments break on identity, not hardware
Hardly any business runs on one platform only. Designers and developers want Macs, finance and operations are on Windows, and the two have to share the same files, the same email and the same security rules. When that goes wrong, it is almost never because the hardware cannot cope. It is because identity and file access were never joined up.
-
01
Start with identity
The fix is to stop treating Macs as visitors on the network. Connect them to the same directory everyone else uses, so a Mac user signs in with the same Microsoft 365 account, the same multi-factor authentication applies, and revoking access when someone leaves genuinely revokes it everywhere.
-
02
Files, printing and the awkward bits
Keep shared files in SharePoint and OneDrive rather than a legacy file share, which is where cross-platform setups usually start to creak. Then test the practical things on both platforms instead of assuming they work. Printing, VPN and conditional access are the usual culprits.
-
03
Handled by us, not a reseller chain
We are a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider, so the Microsoft 365 and Entra ID side is handled directly by us rather than through a reseller chain, and the Mac side is managed to the same standard as the PCs beside it.
Security
Macs are not exempt
The idea that Macs do not get malware is comfortably out of date. macOS is actively targeted, most commonly by information stealers dressed up as legitimate installers or browser downloads, which go after saved passwords, browser sessions and crypto wallets. The delivery method is usually a person being persuaded to run something, which is exactly why endpoint protection and user awareness both matter.
What we put in place
- Managed endpoint protection for macOS with central alerting
- FileVault full-disk encryption enforced and key escrow held
- macOS and third-party app patching on a schedule
- Administrator rights controlled rather than default
- Microsoft 365 sign-in with multi-factor authentication
- Remote lock and wipe for lost or stolen devices
-
01
What macOS already does for you
macOS does ship with some solid defences of its own. Gatekeeper and notarisation check what is allowed to run, XProtect removes known malicious software, and System Integrity Protection stops much of the operating system being tampered with. Those are a solid floor, not a managed security programme. None of them tell you that a device has stopped receiving updates, that encryption was switched off, or that someone has been granted admin rights they should not have.

Cyber Essentials applies to Macs too
The five Cyber Essentials controls apply to Macs exactly as they apply to Windows: firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection and patch management. We hold Cyber Essentials certification ourselves and take clients through it, and Macs are assessed alongside everything else rather than quietly left out of scope.

Frequently asked questions
Not covered here? Ask us directly — same working day response.
020 4634 2518Do you support Apple Macs?
Yes, properly rather than reluctantly. That means day-to-day support for macOS, central device management, endpoint security, and the Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace side of things on Mac. We’ll respond the same working day, and where something needs hands on the hardware one of our field engineers attends.
Can you support a mix of Mac and Windows?
Yes, and it is the more common situation. The important part is joining the two together rather than running them as separate worlds: one directory and one sign-in for everybody, shared files in SharePoint and OneDrive instead of a legacy file share, and the same security rules applied on both platforms. Handled that way, people stop noticing which one they are on.
Do you manage Macs with MDM?
Yes. Mobile device management is what makes a Mac fleet manageable at all. With Apple Business Manager and automated enrolment, devices configure themselves on first boot, settings such as encryption and screen lock are applied centrally, apps and updates are pushed on a schedule, and a lost device can be locked or wiped remotely.
Do Macs need antivirus?
In a business context, yes. macOS has strong built-in protections in Gatekeeper, XProtect and System Integrity Protection, but those are silent and local: they will not tell you that a device is unpatched, that encryption was turned off, or that something was run anyway. Managed endpoint protection adds the central visibility and alerting that distinguishes a protected fleet from a set of individually hopeful laptops.
Can Macs meet Cyber Essentials?
Yes. The five controls are platform-neutral, and a Mac fleet meets them the same way a Windows one does: the firewall enabled, secure configuration applied and held, administrator rights controlled, malware protection in place, and operating system plus application updates installed within the required window. We are Cyber Essentials Certified ourselves and include Macs in scope rather than carving them out.
Can you set up a Mac for a new starter without it coming to us first?
Yes. Bought through the right channel and registered with Apple Business Manager, a Mac can be delivered straight to the person who will use it. It enrols itself when they first switch it on, picks up your configuration and applications, and is ready to work without an engineer ever unboxing it. That is usually the single biggest time saving for a growing team.
