Regulated financial services

Operational resilience is a regulatory expectation, not an IT preference

Financial services firms are held to a standard of resilience that most businesses are not. Since March 2022 FCA-regulated firms have been expected to identify their important business services, set impact tolerances for disruption and be able to show they can stay within them. That obligation reaches directly into IT.

  1. Your IT provider is inside the regulatory perimeter

The FCA expects firms to oversee outsourced arrangements rather than delegate the risk with the work. In practice that means your provider should be able to answer questions about access control, change management, incident response and where data physically sits, in writing and without a scramble. We keep that documentation current because it is asked for, not because it is a nice extra.

  2. Record keeping shapes the architecture

Communications retention, journalling and immutable copies are requirements before they are features, and they change how mailboxes, archives and backups should be configured. Getting this right at design time is far cheaper than reconstructing history later.

  3. Testing the recovery, not just the backup

An impact tolerance you have never tested is an assumption. We would rather rehearse a restore against a defined recovery time and find the gaps in a planned exercise than discover them during an incident.

  4. Concentration risk cuts both ways

Regulators have grown wary of firms depending on a single provider for everything, and the same logic applies to the platforms underneath. Knowing which single points of failure exist between your desk and your client’s money, and having a documented answer for each, is a more useful exercise than adding another tool. We would rather map that honestly and tell you where the exposure sits than pretend a monitoring dashboard removes it.

Related regulated sectors: insurance and legal firms.
