Overview

Technology decisions that move your business forward

Without a plan, IT spend becomes reactive and disconnected from where the business is going. Good strategy turns technology into an advantage.

WhizzIT works with you to understand your goals and build a practical, prioritised roadmap, covering systems, security, cloud and budget, so every decision has a purpose.

Back to IT Project Management

What's included

  • Technology review and current-state assessment
  • Prioritised, budget-aware roadmap
  • Cloud and infrastructure strategy
  • Security and compliance planning
  • Vendor and licensing guidance
  • Regular strategic reviews
The problem

The symptom is that you only think about IT when it breaks

If technology only reaches the agenda when something has gone wrong, then every decision gets made under pressure and usually costs more than it needed to.

A server fails and suddenly there is an unbudgeted five figure decision to make in a fortnight. A renewal lands that nobody knew was coming, on terms nobody negotiated. Laptops get replaced one at a time as they die, which is the most expensive way to do it. Somebody asks whether you are secure enough for a new client's questionnaire and the answer is a shrug.

It is the absence of a plan, and it is entirely fixable. The point of strategy work is not a document that impresses people. It is knowing what is coming, roughly what it costs and roughly when, so decisions get made deliberately with time to shop around.

What tends to be missing

  • A refresh plan for hardware before it fails
  • A renewal calendar with dates and costs
  • Somewhere to see risks written down
  • A budget line for IT rather than surprises
  • A view of what growth will require
  • Evidence ready for client security questionnaires
Deliverables

What you actually get

Concrete outputs rather than a slide deck nobody opens twice.

A roadmap with dates and costs

A prioritised plan covering the next twelve to twenty four months. What needs doing, roughly what it costs, what depends on what, and what can safely wait. Written so a non-technical director can read it and make a decision, because that is usually who has to approve it.

A lifecycle and renewal picture

Every significant asset and contract with its age, its renewal date and its likely replacement window. This is the single most useful artefact for finance, because it turns IT from an unpredictable expense into a forecast you can plan around.

A risk register you can act on

The things that could genuinely hurt, ranked by how likely and how damaging, each with an owner and a next step. Not a list of theoretical threats. The unsupported server, the one person who knows how something works, the backup nobody has ever restored from.

The rhythm

Strategy is a habit, not a document

A plan written once and filed is worth very little. Businesses change, budgets move, a client asks for something new, and a roadmap drifts out of date within a couple of quarters if nobody revisits it.

Quarterly or half-yearly suits most businesses we work with: what did we plan, what actually happened, what changed in the business, what moves up the list. It usually takes an hour and it stops the plan quietly becoming fiction.

A technology audit or IT health check gives the roadmap something factual to stand on rather than assumptions about what is installed and how old it is. If you have never had that done, it is the sensible starting point.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

A plan that connects technology decisions to where the business is actually going. In practice it is a prioritised roadmap with costs and dates, a lifecycle view of your hardware and contracts, and a risk register. The test of a good one is whether it helps you make a decision faster and cheaper than you would have otherwise.
Smaller teams often benefit most, because there is less slack to absorb a surprise. A lightweight roadmap that tells you the server needs replacing within eighteen months and roughly what that costs is worth far more than a thick document, and it stops the decision arriving as an emergency.
A prioritised roadmap covering the next twelve to twenty four months with indicative costs, an asset and renewal register with dates, and a risk register with owners and next steps. Written to be read by whoever signs off the budget rather than only by someone technical.
Quarterly or half-yearly for most businesses. Short reviews keep the plan connected to reality, which an annual exercise never manages. What changed, what got done, what moves up the list. It is usually an hour well spent.
It helps a great deal. A roadmap built on assumptions about what is installed, how old it is and what it is licensed for tends to unravel on contact with the facts. If you have never had a proper technology audit or IT health check, that is the sensible first step and it makes everything afterwards more accurate.
The roadmap has to be useful to you or it is worth nothing, so it includes things we do not sell and occasionally the advice to keep something you already have rather than replace it. Where we are the right people for a piece of work we will say so, and you are free to price it elsewhere.
