Brokers, MGAs and insurers

The resilience you sell is the resilience you are judged on

Insurance businesses hold an unusual concentration of sensitive personal data and, in health and protection lines, special-category data too. They also occupy an awkward position: a broker whose systems are down is unavailable at exactly the moment a client needs to notify a claim.

  1. Claims and renewal peaks are not evenly spread

Workload arrives in bursts around renewal dates and after weather events, and capacity has to be there on the day rather than on average. Monitoring that only reports monthly uptime will miss the hour that actually mattered.

  2. Broker platforms and insurer portals are the working day

Quoting, binding and claims handling all run through a mix of broker software and insurer extranets, each with its own authentication and browser quirks. Keeping that estate stable, patched and accessible is most of the practical support work in this sector.

  3. Special-category data raises the bar on access

Where medical or health information is held, the standard for who can see what stops being a matter of tidiness and becomes a matter of lawful basis. Role-based access, logging and reviewed permissions are the mechanics that make that defensible.

  4. Delegated authority means someone else’s data on your systems

MGAs and brokers operating under delegated authority hold data the insurer remains accountable for, which means the insurer’s own assurance requirements land on your infrastructure. Expect questions about encryption, retention periods, sub-processors and breach notification timelines, and expect them in a questionnaire rather than a conversation. Having those answers documented in advance turns a two-week scramble into an afternoon.

Related regulated sectors: financial services and legal firms.
