Overview

Get the foundations right

Everything on your network depends on the cabling underneath it. Poor or improvised cabling causes intermittent faults that are painful to diagnose and expensive to live with.

WhizzIT designs and installs structured cabling done properly, the right cable for the job, neat comms rooms, clear labelling and full testing and certification, so your network has a foundation you can rely on and easily extend.

Why cabling causes strange faults

Intermittent problems usually start underneath

Cabling faults rarely announce themselves. They surface as a call that drops once a day, a machine that negotiates at a tenth of its speed, or a camera that goes offline when the heating runs. Because the symptoms look like software, teams often spend weeks in the wrong place before anyone tests the cable.

A tester that lights up green confirms continuity. Certification measures the things that actually degrade performance: crosstalk, return loss, attenuation and length, against the standard for the category installed. It is also the only evidence that the installation met specification on the day, which matters when a fault appears two years later and nobody can agree what was installed.

Cabling outlives several generations of the equipment plugged into it, so the sensible question is not what today's switches need but what the building will need before it is next refitted. The cost difference between categories is small next to the cost of pulling cable through an occupied building a second time.

Heat, dust and improvisation account for a large share of hardware failures. A rack in a cupboard with no ventilation will shorten the life of everything in it, and a rack with no patching discipline turns a five-minute change into an afternoon. Ventilation, power, containment and labelling are not tidiness for its own sake; they decide how long a fault takes to find.

An unlabelled patch field means every future change begins with tracing. A documented schedule mapping outlet to patch panel to switch port turns that into a two-minute job. It is the cheapest thing to do during installation and the most expensive to reconstruct afterwards.

Planning an installation

The disruptive part is access, not the cable

Most of the work in an occupied building is about getting to places: ceilings, risers, and rooms that can only be entered outside business hours. Agreeing routes, containment and access windows before starting is what keeps an installation from becoming a series of interruptions, and it is the part most often underestimated when a date is promised.

New sites and fit-outs are considerably cheaper to cable before fit-out finishes than after, so this is worth raising early in any move. Cabling underpins everything else on the network, particularly business Wi-Fi, where access point positions dictate where outlets must land.

It's a standardised, organised cabling system for your building, cabling, patch panels and cabinets designed and installed to a recognised standard so it's reliable, documented and easy to extend.
It depends on your speed needs, cable runs and how future-proof you want to be. We'll recommend the right specification, and can install fibre where higher performance or distance is required.
